Ask car enthusiasts to name their poster car of the past decade and one candidate gets mentioned with incredible frequency: The Koenigsegg Agera.

It is probably the most iconic model the Swedish marque has produced in its 30-year history, and for good reason. Built from 2010 to 2018 with a total of 58 examples in five variants, the sleek yet brutal hypercar is an absolute collector’s favourite. The original Agera was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010 to critical acclaim. Producing nearly 950 horsepower from its twin-turbocharged V8 engine, this monstrous car can reach speeds up to 400 km/h, with a later variant of the Agera, known as the Agera RS, setting the world record for production car top speed at 447 km/h.

While many exceptionally bespoke specs of the Agera were produced, especially of the later models, a select few stunning cars stay true to the original DNA of Koenigsegg, conserving the clean, no-frills design and distilled essence of the Agera. One of these rare original cars is the Agera X, chassis 7088, currently set to be auctioned with RM Sotheby’s during their Paris auction on February 5th, 2025.

Weighing in at just 1,435 kg, everything about the Agera was designed for peak performance, with much of the car being made of ultra-lightweight carbon fibre. Agera X has its carbon fibre body panels painted in satin black, accented by a red double stripe in the “Claw” design and bordered by fine white lines. It sits on Koenigsegg’s proprietary Vortex Generating Rims, or VGRs, introduced with the Agera-series, which are painted in a glossy black with white and red accents. It is one of the very few – four to be exact - Koenigsegg Agera examples to sport the original F1-twin-deck wing, adding to its desirability among collectors.

The Koenigsegg Agera was penned to replace the CCX, freshening the Competition Coupe design language for the next decade and improving performance to consistently dominate competitors in the hypercar niche. As such, Koenigsegg moved on from the two superchargers used in the CCX, opting for twin-turbochargers alongside the Agera’s 5.0L V8 engine.

The story of chassis 7088, the example in question, begins in 2011. The car was delivered new to a German customer, the main shareholder of Porsche tuner Gemballa, who drove the car nearly 5,000km during their nearly four-year ownership. During this ownership, the car resided in the German state of Baden-Württemberg, but also spent time in Liechtenstein, where it was registered. It was this owner who coined the nickname of Agera ‘X’ for this car, something which has stuck ever since! During the first ownership, the car could be seen in Monaco frequently enjoying the perfect weather of the Côte d’Azur and attracting lots of attention at events such as Top Marques Monaco in 2012.

By 2015, Agera ‘X’ had a new owner, a Russian financier, who kept the car for mere months before selling it onwards. The next owner was a German collector based in Monaco who retained the vehicle for a number of years, driving it lovingly. It was seen on British plates at the 2015 Modena Trackdays at the Circuit Spa Franchorchamps, where it was racing alongside the factory One:1 prototype, on the hunt for a new track record. Other notable events in which this car participated include the 2018 Ghost Squadron Owner’s Tour.

In 2019, Agera ‘X’ was acquired by the current owner and the consignor of this lot, a noted collector based in Germany. In the winter of late 2020 and early 2021, this vehicle was retrofitted with the famous "Triplex" suspension by marque specialist Esser Automotive. This upgrade significantly enhanced the car’s stability under load, further refining its already remarkable handling. The Triplex damper compresses as the car accelerates, providing dampened resistance against squat under hard acceleration. The Triplex damper allows a certain amount of squat, but not so much that the rear wheels struggle to provide optimal traction or the front wheels lose steering feel. This suspension can also be found in the more track-orientaed One:1 models and the current Jesko line-up. All together, this modification makes this example that much more perfect for a collector looking to drive!

The interior, which was originally two-tone white leather and black leather, was refitted by the Koenigsegg factory in 2020. It now sports a modernized look of black alcantara and black leather, with red stitching, which matches the car’s menacing exterior. Further, the seats feature blue and yellow striping, the colours of the Swedish flag, as a tribute to the roots of the marque.

The car has been meticulously maintained by certified Koenigsegg dealer Esser Automotive, with the most recent service carried out by a contractor from Semco Cars in Munich, near the car’s residence. It remains a fantastic running example, frequently seen at events such as Cars and Coffee, the Supercar Owner’s Circle, Supercar Sunday, and the Ghost Squadron Owner’s Tours organized by Koenigsegg.

We have had the privilege of experiencing this car first-hand, covering hundreds of kilometers in its presence. It’s an absolutely thrilling and addictive machine! If there is a more perfect car to kick off a Koenigsegg collection, we are yet to see it.

Finally, the number 8 (chassis 7088) holds special significance in Chinese culture, symbolizing fortune and good luck. Perhaps this is the final bit of motivation you need to place your bid!

Priced very fairly with an estimate of €1,800,000 - €2,300,000 (US$1,850,000 - $2,400,000), with plenty of potential to increase in value, this is an unmissable opportunity to own a timeless, record-breaking Swedish powerhouse that should not be ignored! We cannot wait to watch as this masterpiece crosses the auction block in Paris!
